Our Story
New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Belle Glade, Florida, has a rich history rooted in the African American community. Established in 1932, the church was founded under the leadership of Pastor George L. Hebley and is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention of the United States of America Inc. It served as a spiritual and community anchor during the Great Depression, a time when many African American churches played pivotal roles in providing support and leadership to their communities.
Located at 1101 W Avenue A, the church has been a steadfast presence in Belle Glade, a city with a deep history tied to the Everglades Agricultural Area and a significant African American population. The area, originally known as Hillsboro, was incorporated in 1928, and the earliest known inhabitants were the Calusa Indians. Today, Belle Glade is affectionately known as “Muck City” due to its rich agricultural heritage and the notable NFL talent it has produced .
Incorporated as a nonprofit in 1992, New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church continues to serve the community through worship, outreach, and fellowship. Under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Leslie D. Camel, the church remains dedicated to its mission of love, joy, and peace .
The church’s legacy is also preserved through archival records, such as those held by the Florida Memory project, which document its establishment and role in the community during the early 20th century .
